Budget & Investment
Budget & Investment is a program designed to stimulate the students'
thinking skills by presenting them with a real life situation. They are
given the task of making their money stretch to cover everyday expenses
while still having enough to invest wisely in the stock market. The program
assigns each student (up to 38 can be in the registry at any one time) a
salary, deducts federal tax, state tax, and social security. What money is
left is paid at the beginning of each session (one session is considered a
week by the program.) Each student is given $1,000 at the start to help
them buy stock right away.
Using their salary, the student must pay bills such as grocery, car
repairs, entertainment, etc each week. Every four weeks they must pay
rent and utilities also. Insurance must be paid every twelve weeks. If
there is any money left, the students may visit the stock broker to buy
or sell stock. They may view stock performance in table and chart format
before making their decisions. Planning is important because only one
buy/sell visit to the broker is allowed in each session. Also, negative
bank balances are not allowed - just as in life - so if a student cannot
pay their bills, they must sell stock. A program session cannot be
completed while there are bills waiting to be paid.
The registered version covers 26 weeks and includes reproducible sheets
to be used by the student to track and chart their balances, stocks, and
so forth. The shareware version is a demonstration only and will not go
beyond the third week.
USING THE PROGRAM
The program can be started by entering BUDGET at the DOS prompt. The
registration screen will come up. If this is the first time a student
is using the program, they will need to type in a unique name in one of
the blank places (a maximum or 38 students can be listed at one time) and
hit ENTER. The program will then randomly select a salary and create the
data fields for that student. If the student is already in the registry,
they must highlight their name and press ENTER. The program will then load
the data from their previous sessions. NOTE: The entire registry file can
be cleared by pressing CTRL and F1 at the same time - this clears ALL
students. Pressing CTRL and F2 at the same time will delete only the
student which is highlighted.
After signing in, the student is taken to the main screen. Here, the
student name, total value of stocks owned, and personal worth (bank balance
+ total stock value) are displayed. In the upper right box is the salary,
taxes, and take home pay values. The lower right box shows the rent amount,
utility bill amount, and the insurance amount. Rent and utilities must be
paid every 4 weeks, insurance every 12.
There is a box called the MESSAGE CENTER where current bills that must be
paid are displayed. Every week will have a food bill and some miscellaneous
bill. Pressing F1 (as shown in the right, middle box) will take the student
to the screen for paying bills. They must select which bill to pay and then
they will see the check they are paying with. Pressing ESC returns them to
the main screen.
Pressing F2 takes the student to the stock broker where they can buy or
sell stock. They cannot sell stock they do not have or buy stock if they
have no money (naturally.) Therefore, students must do some planning and
research (using other options explained later) before coming here.
Pressing F3 takes the student to their bank transactions report. Here
they will see all bills that have been paid and all deposits from salary
and stock sales (the log is for all weeks, not just the current one.)
Pressing F4 takes the student to the stock performance history table.
Here they can see the cost per share for each of the 20 stocks listed in
a table format for up to seven weeks. Note: The first session will
display only the current value of he stocks, the second will show weeks one
and two, and so on. Share values are pre-determined and stored in a data
file so every student gets the same stock values - there are no random
values here.
Pressing F5 takes the students to the chart utility where they can see
stock performance in chart form or their own personal worth in chart form
over time. This is handy for making decisions on how well stocks are
performing. However, just like real life, past performance is no
guarantee that they will perform the same in future sessions.
Pressing F6 will save the student's data for that week (as long as all
the bills due have been paid.) They will be asked to press F6 a second
time to confirm leaving. Note - a student can press ESC from the main
screen to exit without saving in the event they wish to start that week
over because of a mistake. Once saved, however, old data cannot be
changed.
Once the last week has been completed (week 26 in the registered version,
week 3 in the shareware) the student's final results will be displayed and
their name will be removed from the sign-in registry.
